28 Feb 21 - Bench Rebuild for a Friend

On Friday after dropping Mom off at the Sanford Airport I picked up this bench from Matt, the laser etching guy to rebuild.  It belongs to his mother and is around 50 years old.  The seat was a frame with luan siding on the top and bottom.  The luan was coming apart and had a piece of plywood screwed to the top.  This bench sets outside on her front porch.  I said I could rebuild it, we will see.
I got all the luan stripped off and the center braces out.
This is the seat frame without all the spindles and arms attached.
Here are all the spindles from the back.
Here are the 2 arms with one in the middle clamped to fix damage from taking out the screw that held the arm on.
I glued up the frame so I can use it as a template when it comes time to mark and drill the holes to reconnect the back and arms to the solid seat that I plan to make.

28 Feb 21 - Cutting Board Fail

Today I got the cutting board cut down to a rectangle and was using the belt sander to get it smoothed down.  When all of a sudden it grabbed the right edge and slung it off the table and onto the floor.  With a crash it broke into all these pieces.  Now it is going to be fire wood!  A good learning experience.

24 Feb 21 - Front Flower Bed Finished

We washed and picked through a lot of rocks today.  We found nails, glass, shingle pieces, and lots of roots.  But it is done!  It was my mother's idea to do the job and she did quite a lot of work even though we didn't get any pictures of her actually working. We also had a little help from the next door neighbors son.  He had a good time using the hose and dragging the bucket around.
He did a good job going thru the rocks finding nails.
The front flower be is complete!
I hope it stays this nice for quite some time.  I still have to get 2 more edge pieces on the right side to finish it out.

Got them laid out.
Planting the last one.

Still washing rocks!  Got a lot more to do tomorrow.

22 Feb 21 - More Flower Bed Work

Finally finished sifting all the dirt.  Then painted the concrete borders and put them back in.
Slow but sure!
Got all the dirt leveled out.  Have to get more edges for behind the plywood.  Decided to change this curved piece to a 90 degree ending to like up with the concrete pad.
Tomorrow we get plants!

20 Feb 21 - Flower Bed Day 2

Today we dug out the flower beds, sifted the rocks from the dirt and the plant roots and the nails.
Removed the concrete edging to be cleaned and repainted.
We are almost done sifting the rocks!
Piled the rocks in the driveway to be cleaned and replaced once the weed barrier and new plants are put in.

18 Feb 21 - Redoing the Front Flower Bed, Again!

Mom had the idea to redo the front flower bed. So we started today.
Step one, pulling out all the plants.
Put some in pots for the front porch.
Gave some to the neighbors, and threw away the rest!

18 Feb 21 - Painting the Edge of the Pool

The pool guys are finishing the last step in the pool resurfacing.  They are painting the edge of the pool.  Going to look good.

12 Feb 21 - Mahogany Delivery

All the grandkids and their parents came up this weekend.  Jonathan delivered a load of mahogany for the wood shop.  He has a friend that was having a tree removed so he got some branches and had them milled.  He kept a few pieces and brought me the rest.  I have to let it dry for about 6 months before I can use it.  Should make some pretty stuff!

5 Feb 21 - New Planer Cleaning

I pulled the planer out of the sealed box and found this rust on the cast iron bed!  Looks pretty nasty.
There was even rust under the blade guard.
And a little on the fence.

With some magic sauce and a scotch brite pad lets see how it turns out.

The magic sauce is WD-40 and a little rubbing with the pad.

And amazingly it came pretty clean.  There is still a shadow on both ends where the rust was, but not bad looking.  I then put a coat of wipe on polyurethane and then a coat of wax to make it slippery.  Now it is ready for use.

4 Feb 21 - Frost on the Truck

We have frost on the truck and on several roofs!

2 Feb 2021 - We found a Unicorn!

Yesterday during breakfast I saw a Shopsmith Mark V for sale that claimed to be new in the box and purchased in 2001.  So I contacted the seller to get the details and to see it it could be true at the price listed.  He said it was true, I said we would come and get it today, so we took off at 3:30 to drive to Spring Hill, Fl to get it.  It turns out that I was the unicorn he said it was.  His father-in-law bought it new and never assembled it or plugged it in.
All the boxes fit in the bed of the truck without removing the hitch and we were home at 9:30 pm, what a drive.
Here is the date of manufacture stamp on the motor.
There is a little oxidation on these tubes because they had cardboard on them.
One box empty!
Tables are on, now to flip it over and put the legs on.
Legs and casters are on and it runs!  So a 20 year old brand new shopsmith what a deal!  Very pleased with it.  Tomorrow I have to align it and assemble the band saw and the jointer.  Happy days!
