20 Jul 21 - Leaking RV Toilet

UPDATE - Purchased the only part the RV store had in stock.  Took about 10 minutes or less to replace the part. It took longer to get the tools and light and put them back than it did to replace the part.  Good thing is the part fixed the leak!  Back to normal operation.

We found the floor behind the toilet wet on the trip home from Michigan, but we hadn't located the leak yet.  I believe we have found the leak and picked up a replacement today.

This is a Vacuum Breaker valve that is know to leak and that is where ours is leaking.  How I can change it without taking the toilet off the floor.

16 Jul 21 - Pepper Plants

Several months ago my neighbor gave us 6 pepper plants.  We planted them in our grow box and then something ate all the leaves from all 6 plants.  5 of the plant stems dried up and were gone.  One plant has survived and now had a pepper on it.  All we have done is ignore them.

16 Jul 21 - Camper Tire Explosion

On the way south today we were in the Melbourne Florida area talking with Hollie and the kids on face time and we hear a large explosion.  It was "Got to go Hollie, we just had a blowout!"  We saw smoke rolling out from the passenger side thru the mirror and knew it was us.  We got stopped on an exit ramp to make a pit stop like tire change.  As you can see it did a little damage to the metal behind the tire, it looks to be all cosmetic, so that is a good thing.
The explosion ripped the entire tread cap off the tire and it was being dragged instead of continuing to beat up the metal behind the tire.  We put out the safety triangles and did put the spare tire on.  We got off at that exit and found a Rooms-to-go parking lot and had a bite of lunch.  We called around looking to get the spare replaced.  There wasn't a tire to be found in Melbourne, we located one in Ft. Lauderdale and asked Jonathan to pick it up, which he did.  We did not need it for the rest of the trip, I hate to travel without a spare tire.  We did blow to tires in one weekend back in Feb 2014, not a good weekend.
We did arrive a the RV park with no more issues.

9 Jul 21 - Ridgeland, SC - Hipcamp location

This was a super cool place to stay.  The couple lived in the West Palm Beach area and he was a furniture maker.  They decided they had enough of the crazyness down there and sold it all and bought this property.  They have cleared the trees and put in 3 RV spots, one they lived in until they finished the A-frame house.  There is a site for another A-frame set up, a studio for his mother-in-law to work, there is a school house for their son to learn.
The building behind the camper is his wood shop.  What a set up!  He is quite a craftsman, I would like to see the furniture he built!

And we arrived at home Saturday 10 Jul 21!  What a week.

9 Jul 21 - Sevierville, TN before leaving

A few more pictures before we leave.  Very nice place!  Great nights sleep, very quiet.

8 Jul 21 - Sevierville, TN - Hipcamp Location

This location was a challenge to get into!  The driveway was gravel and had a slope in 2 directions.  We decided not to go down to the left side of the red barn because we would slide on the gravel not having 4 wheel drive.  We executed and 5 point u-turn without sliding down the driveway or down toward the chicken coop at the bottom of the draw!  Kathy was very worried while the property owner and I did this move!
Beautiful place though!

8 Jul 21 - The Poo Incident!

The POO story

When we left Michigan on Monday, July 5, 2021 we had been 11 days since our last black tank flush.  Normally we can go about two weeks between flushes, so we reserved a full hookup camp site for Tuesday in Tennessee, and planned to flush the tank there. While stuck camping in the parking lot at Ray Skillman Chevrolet in Indy, waiting for the truck to be fixed, on day 14, Wednesday morning, our black tank went sour.  When we found out the truck repair was going to take at least another day, Kathy started trying to find a septic service truck to come out to us and flush the tank.  Most were not available for at least 2-3 days.  Thankfully, she was able to find one, Service Sanitation, who promised to send a truck between 7 am and 8 am on Thursday morning 8 Jul 21.

So on Thursday, we got up early and were eating breakfast between 7 and 8 am, eagerly awaiting the service truck.  At 8 am we called the company to see where the driver was, and the lady on the phone said it was only 7 am.  Apparently they forgot to mention their office is in central time zone.

Having never used a service like this before, we didn’t know what to expect.  At around 8:30 a Port-a-potty cleaning truck arrived at our spot on the dealership lot.  Since Port-a-potty cleaning is very different than RV tank flushing, I asked the young driver about them not seeing this type of job very often because he had 2 port-a-potty pods on the back of his truck.  He said they see it often during race week, meaning the Indy 500 week.  So I was a little comforted by that statement. In hind sight, I should have asked if “HE” specifically had done this type of job before.

He proceeded to set up to pump out the black tank by hooking a small RV style hose with the proper connection to our clean out pipe.  He then hooked his high powered suction hose to the end of the RV style hose. So far, so good. Then, with both the black tank dump valve and the auxiliary gate valve to the RV tank still closed, he idled up the truck to increase the suction to his hose which immediately collapsed the RV style very flexible hose attachment.

Then, without turning off the suction, he opened the auxiliary gate valve at the end of the cleanout pipe, but because the dump valve was still closed, there was still no flow.  I opened the dump valve for the black tank, but the RV style hose was still collapsed. Although some of the nasty poopy water from the black tank was coming through, the hose stayed collapsed, so the guy tried to force the collapsed hose back to round with his gloved hands.  Well the next thing we know is the RV style hose broke off, and fell away from the connection on the clean-out pipe on the RV. All sorts of nasty are now flowing out of the clean out pipe onto the parking lot.  I wish I had a picture of him sprawled prone on both toes and one hand trying to close the gate valve with the other hand, as poo is still gushing out.  I quickly closed the dump valve and the flow slowed. Meanwhile, he is still in a one handed push up position closing the gate valve.  The flow finally stops.

Fortunately, where we are parked in the dealership parking lot is very far away from everyone and everything else going on at the dealership.  Also fortunately, there is a storm drain for rain runoff very close by.  Not the best place for poopy water to drain, but better than on the black top.  The pump truck driver now picks up the broken RV style hose and disconnects his suction hose from the other end and carries the RV hose over to his truck about 15 feet away.  With one hand, he grabs the hose by the end where his suction hose was previously attached, and with the other hand, he grabs the middle of the hose, leaving the broken end of the hose dangling and flinging poo all over the area, leaving a trail all the way back to the truck, puts the broken hose on the ground, then lifts it again, still flinging poo, and then finally puts it in an empty bucket.

This is about the time that Kathy, who is inside the RV, peeks out the window and sees what appears to be a guy literally swinging a sewer hose back and forth, front and back, flinging poo everywhere.  Horrified, she texted me to find out where I was, and if I was watching him.  We have a thing between us, any time someone is working on anything for us, somebody has to be watching them all the time because you just never know what might happen.  Once I assured her that I was indeed watching, from a safe distance, just as horrified, she asked “Does this guy even understand what just happened?  I mean does he have any idea how this happened?  Because it doesn’t look like he does.”   I told her sadly, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t.

He was very confused as to what happened to put him in this situation.  Next, he unrolled his water hose from the reel on the truck, dragged it over to the camper, and laid it down in the poo mess.  When he tried to wash the mess towards the storm water drain, because of the way he laid the water hose, it made a loop back towards the truck and made a dam collecting the poo he was trying to wash away, effectively making the mess bigger.

Next, he used his vacuum hose with a nozzle attachment to try and reach up into the RV clean out pipe and complete the pumping out of the black tank.  As he was trying unsuccessfully to put the cap back on the RV clean out pipe, I let him know that the bright yellow broken piece of his RV hose attachment was still attached to the end of the clean out pipe. He asked “It is”? Apparently he hadn’t noticed, and didn’t understand why he couldn’t get the cap to go on.  Finally, he collected the rest of his broken attachment, and all his hoses and left the area, leaving a big wet poo spot under and around our camper.  It was a real interesting dance we were doing to try not to step in it as we were hooking the truck up to leave.

Honestly, we felt sorry for the kid.  In a time when nobody wants to work, kudos to him giving something new a try.  And I feel for the company having a hard time finding good help, but for the love of all that is good, he needs to go out with someone more experienced first!!  I’m not sure he will ever really be ready to fly solo doing that job, but maybe if they pair him with somebody for a bit, they can try to find something he can do. We did call the company and let them know what happened.  Thankfully they sent out a manager to come and clean the area.  We were gone already by the time he showed up, but felt better about leaving the area knowing their lot was at least cleaned properly.

We finally left the dealership around 9:30 am.  You might be able to see the wet poo spot just to the left of the light pole.

7 Jul 21 - Fuel Tank Dropped and rediagnosed

The fuel tank is on the red cart under the truck.  The mechanic cannibalized another 2017 truck for the Fuel Pump Control Module temporarily and the truck ran so he put the part back in the donor truck.  So he knew the problem was that.  He put the original pump back in the tank and put the tank back into the it proper place.  He said it would take about 15 minutes to put in the control module once it arrived and he got it from parts.  Should be leaving by 9 or 10 tomorrow.

7 Jul 21 - Camping spot at Ray Skillman Chevrolet Parking Lot

It was hot out and we didn't run the generator during the day. NO plug in was available to run the camper.  So I got out our chair and we sat in the shade and had a nice breeze.  It was much cooler than being in the camper in the afternoon.

The new fuel pump got put in today and that was not the problem.  It looks like the Fuel Pump Control Module is the problem and that part was ordered today and will be in tomorrow morning.  Another night in the parking lot.

I was setting in the chair getting truckers honking and waving as they drove by!  It was entertaining.  Got to make the best of a situation!

6 Jul 21 - Traffic on I-74

This is how close we are to I-74 and this traffic went all night long.  First nights sleep was not very good.

6 Jul 21 - The truck on the Rack

The mechanic did his initial diagnosis and said the fuel pump, level gauge, and fuel pump control module was bad.  The pump was located about 1 1/2 hours from here and would be here in the morning.  There the truck sat for the night.

5 Jul 21 - Arrival at the Dealership.

5 pm we arrived at the dealership.  We are checking into the service department to see where the camper can be placed.
There was a dead end road right against I-74 that the driver backed us into.

Camper unhooked, now to get the truck to the service area.  Since it was almost 6 pm they were not going to diagnose the truck till maybe tomorrow.

Killer backing skills!

5 Jul 21 - The start of a long week! Indianapolis

With all the tasks completed at Moms for this year it was time to head home.  We got into Indianapolis on I-465 and was about to take the ramp to I-74 when the "Reduced Power" message came on the dash immediately followed by the "Check Engine" light and the "Traction Control" light.  We didn't have enough time to process what was happening to take the right ramp which was more level and maybe a down ramp.  We were taking the high flying ramp to I-74!  The truck decided to stop running, and with that no power steering or power brakes.  I eased the truck over to the right as far as I could.  The breakdown lase is only about 5 feet wide.  The truck and camper are all of 8 feet wide.  So I hung out into the lane. What a spot to be in!
Most people slowed down and moved across the yellow line.  Kathy started calling our roadside plan to get a wrecker to us and get us off of this ramp.
About 1 1/2 hours after out initial stop the road ranger came over.  He was a former Marine, he said I have to call the State Police to direct traffic and I will call a wrecker to get you out of here.  I said Please do!  The state police officer showed up and he was a retired National Guardsman from Indiana, so we talked for quite a while waiting on the wrecker.
The wrecker showed up a little after 4 pm, we stopped in this location about 1:30 pm.  It took him about an hour to get us all hooked up.  We had found and contacted at local Chevy dealer just 4 miles from our current spot and they agreed to let us stay in their lot with the camper while they worked on the truck. The closest campground was 30 miles away and we couldn't move the camper once the truck quit.
I rode with the wrecker drive and Kathy rode with the Road Ranger, and we were off!
Pulling up the ramp to I-74.
First exit to the dealership!  We are safely off the interstate. What a relief.

4 Jul 21 - Another local passing thru

Today I spotted this deer and it gave me enough time to get a few pictures and a little video.  It is standing just in the woods behind the apple trees.  Very big deer!  She has not seen many deer this year. M31 is being connected to I94 and has messed up the deer's travel patterns.

3 Jul 21 - Neighbors Play House

We walked down the hill next to the Alfalfa field to Fred and Beth's place.  They have been very nice neighbors to Mom.  This is the play house they built for their kids.  It has a loft bed that can been seen thru the upper window.  It has power and a ceiling fan and was often slept in by their kids when they were younger.  Fred grew up in the house on the corner.

2 Jul 21 - Turkey Droppings

Found this Turkey feather back in the orchard.

2 Jul 21 - New Roof Vents on the Camper

I installed 2 new roof vents while at Mom's house this week.  I had already installed the one just above before we left Florida.  I picked up another one in Georgia and put that in the bathroom. And this one I ordered thru Amazon.  We cracked the cover on this one backing into the horse farm in Jupiter Farms last month.

2 Jul 21 - Cutting the Aflalfa Field next door

The farmer at the bottom of the hill cut the alfalfa field today.  They will let it dry our for a few days and then bail it up to feed their horses thru the winter.  They usually cut it a few times in the summer.

1 Jul 21 - Visited by another local

While setting out on the back deck at Mom's house Kathy was visited by another local.  A butterfly landed on her foot.

30 Jun 21 - Ayden's Birthday Party

We went down to Shipshewana to celebrate a 5th birthday with our friends son. He was probably 2 2/1 when we met him. His sister is 15 I believe.

25 Jun 21 - Local Turkeys!

2 big male turkeys walking in Mom's front yard.

Them walking thru the alfalfa field next door.

24 Jun 21 - Mom's House

Arrived at Mom's this afternoon.  She didn't know we were coming today, we were supposed to be there tomorrow.  But we surprised her and arrived a day early.

24 Jun 21 - Field of Amazon Trucks

On the way to Goshen pulling th ecamper we passed a field full of new Amazon trucks.  My guess there is a local shop that does the wrap on the trucks and they are waiting to be delivered.  There must have been over 500 of them.

23 Jun 21 - Amish Camping

On our way back from the RV AC shop just down the road we had to slow down for a farm tractor pulling an rv.  Little did I know it was going to be parked a few spots from our spot.  It was a young Amish couple, they can't drive a car, but farm tractors are ok.  So they brought the camper to the site with the tractor.

22 Jul 21 - Camping in Howe Indiana

I did stop and gorilla tape up the AC cover so it wouldn't get any worse.  We are up in RV country, where a lot of the units are built including this one.  I bet we can find a replacement cover.
Our somewhat level rv site in Howe.  We were supposed to meet some friends here but they had some issues with their camper and stayed in Goshen to get it checked out.
Not very level!

21 jul 21 - Damaged Roof AC Cover

We hit a low branch going up to our site in Nashville and damaged the AC cover.  No damage was done to the AC unit itself, good thing!
